Atariel has vowed to never kill a living thing, an effortless task in her isolated village. But when a bear spirit emerges from the forest she loves, and warns that a necromancer is after her, she must venture into the world to learn who her enemy is. Supported by fellow travelers, the godmother she never knew she had, the girl who abandoned her a decade earlier, and a murderous tracker, she must gather the pieces of an ancient weapon from animal spirits. Faced with corrupt rulers bent on deforestation and uneasy decisions about whether the ends justify the means, Atariel must also survive attacks from the gathering army of the undead.
